Group Exhibition
6 - 11 JUN 2019
Site Gallery, Sheffield
Subconscious Sensibilities is the UK's largest festival group exhibition welcoming artists working in both modern and timeless art forms in installation, moving image, sound art, artificial intelligence and virtual & augmented reality. The programme welcomes the work of Zoyander Street, PanGenerator, Alexey Furman, Kelsey Boncato, Tamara Shogaolu, IP Yuk-Yiu, Bill Posters/Dr Daniel Howe, Frederik Duerinck, Camille Duvelleroy, Darren Emerson, Rob Eagle & Georgie Pinn.
Subconscious Sensibilities addresses the science behind the attention and distraction levels in participation through technology and non-fiction narratives. It acts as a mirror to modern everyday culture in both individual and collective experiences and acts as a catalyst to help us build a stronger appreciation of distant communities.
Presenting cautionary tales of data harvesting opening our eyes to discrimination and the failures of utopian design, blending our identities with those around us to acting as the trigger for generating sound samples from underground Polish radio. The artworks unsettle at first, slowly garnering addiction and challenging self behaviour.
Supported by a meticulously designed series of wooden recyclable pavilions, they act as the exhibitions consistent base layer, similar to the set of a film, the subject in the forefront isn't the only focal point on display. As timber slats and overarching birch ply roofs are re-treated and re-defined to no longer act as concealed supporting mechanisms, similar to that of a traditional exhibition setup, to the proud staging holding their own visual identity, whilst carrying out a functional mapping for the digital mechanical appliances to weave through.
As the programme welcomes both individual and collective experiences, the pavilions are neither closed off nor completely open spaces, not unlike a balcony or a petrol station, in questioning territory with their informal perimeters.
Co-curated by Joseph Cutts as part of Sheffield Doc/Fest's Arts Programme (Alternate Realities).
